Bringing the beauty and wisdom of Africa to you is not just a tag line, it our truest intention. Ixakhoes Kreations is a family company. Douglas was born and raised in Namibia, Southern Africa, and Marissa was raised in Oakland, Ca. The pair met while Marissa was serving in the Peace Corps and working in Douglas's village. They fell in love, got married, and returned to the states.
Now they have decided to go into a business that pays homage to his cultural heritage (as well as their daughter's) and brings the wisdom that Marissa acquired during her 2 year stay to others. She was both teacher and learner during her stay, and getting to live amongst the Namibian people has been truly a gift and a blessing to her. She received her first set of waistbeads, which were made of ostrich eggshells, while there and was later taught to make her own.
Douglas's large family seems to make up at least 25% of Namibia's small population. He comes from a long line of miners and sellers of precious gemstones. We have included a picture of Douglas's beautiful mother, Babas. She is selling stones to a tourist in a makeshift stall in the Namib Desert, which is the oldest desert in the world. She and countless other women like her stand in the blistering sun daily hoping that the tourists will come buy something, so that they will be able to provide for their families.
Douglas and Marissa will be returning to Namibia in the coming year and plan on working towards establishing a foundation to aid these Ixakhoedi (beautiful women) and their children. Our first order of business will be to establish a kindergarten for the young children. (In Namibia formal schooling begins at Grade 1). Marissa, who is a teacher, will train the teachers and Ixakhoes Kreations will make a regular donation to the Ixakhoedi based on profits from the sell of Ixakhoes Kreations.
Thank you for taking the time to stop by, and please check back for updates on the Ixakhoedi of Namibia!
